What to Pack
Calgary and area has a moderate four-season climate, with large variations in temperature between seasons and from one locale to another. Summer days in the city of Calgary are usually warm and dry with cool evenings because of the altitude and proximity to the mountains. However, a summer day in Drumheller is often very hot and dry, approximating desert-like conditions. A summer day in the mountains can be hot but the evenings are always cool.
Alberta has more hours of sunshine in a year than any other province in Canada and Calgary is known for its blue skies. A unique phenomenon called a Chinook wind can raise temperatures more than 20 degrees in one day, turning winter days into spring. Spring/Fall
Early spring can be quite unpredictable in Calgary, with daytime temperatures in March and April near or below 10°C with the occasional chance of below freezing temperatures and snow. May brings a noticeable warmup, with daytime temperatures averaging near 16°C.
Autumn is quite mild in Calgary. Mid October usually brings the first frost.
What to pack:- Warm clothing that can be layered during the day
- Light waterproof rain coat
- Warm coat for the evenings
Summer
In the Summer months (June, July, August) Calgary experiences warm, dry summers.With high temperatures in the range of 21°C to 23°C.
What to pack:- Short sleeved shirts & shorts for the daytime
- Light sweaters, and pants for the evening
- Light waterproof rain coat or windbreaker
- If you're going to be in the mountains, pack good hiking shoes or boots and warm clothing that can be layered.
Winter
In the Winter months (December, January, February) Calgary experiences cool dry winters, with temperature typically in the range of 0°C to -3°C. Calgary normally receives approx. 60-100 cm of snowfall during the winter months.
What to pack:- Warm/Heavy coat
- Waterproof boots/shoes
- Gloves, scarf and warm hat
- Skiwear for the mountains
